WFSB Channel 3 Eyewitness News, the CBS affiliate in Connecticut, led its 11 p.m. newscast on Halloween with the story of a nightmare—but it had nothing to do with ghosts or goblins.

“A Brookfield family lost everything after hiring a contractor for a simple remodeling job,” reporter Eric Parker says in opening the I-Team story about the nightmare of Carol Degen and her family.
They hired a contractor to renovate the kitchen and bathroom of their modest house and wound up with the house gutted, deep in debt, and essentially homeless.
Cramer & Anderson Partner John Tower filed suit against the Danbury contractor hired by Degen, and won a court judgment against the contractor of roughly $471,000.
The Degens, meanwhile, were rescued by the Holland Family Foundation, which provides them with housing in New Milford.
