Cramer & Anderson has donated $500 to the Daily Bread Food Pantry in Danbury, continuing the firm’s annual support for the nonprofit that distributes food free of charge and has welcomed those in need, whatever their background or circumstances, since 1984.
“Daily Bread is an essential lifeline for many families in Greater Danbury,” said Immigration Law Partner Lisa Rivas, who is based in the firm’s Danbury office. “Its relocation, growth, and refinement of how it operates to serve families in a more optimal way are impressive.”
The Daily Bread Food Pantry moved from its former location at St. James Episcopal Church to a new, much larger space at 125 Park Avenue, the former home of the U.S. Military Museum. The new facility is 10 times larger than the previous one, providing much more space for inventory and operations.
The new space allows for a supermarket feel and a client-choice model. Instead of receiving a pre-packed bag of food, clients can now walk through the pantry and choose the items they need, which is a more dignified and empowering experience.
To ensure fair distribution, the pantry has implemented a point-based system. Each household is given a certain number of points each month, which they can “spend” on items in the pantry. The number of points depends on household size and other factors.
The new super pantry is open Monday through Saturday. Visitors are required to make an appointment to ensure a smooth flow of traffic and a positive shopping experience. The new facility also features amenities like a children’s book nook and a social service library to connect clients with other vital resources.
When Daily Bread first opened its doors, it served a handful of folks from a single shopping cart. Today, more than 800 families are typically served each week – and with the new, larger facility, the Daily Bread Food Pantry has become a model for other food pantries in the area.
